When I first sat down to write out what magic means to me, it was from pen to paper, ready to slot neatly into the front of my Book of Shadows.
I didn’t really know where to start. What does magic mean to me? Even in the short space of time from first writing out my intentions for a magical practice to now, my perception of it has deepened.
Which is why it’s so beautiful to have hard copies of where I started, and how that definition changes over time. It really is a journey of infinite growth.
But anyway, here’s what came through for me…
As above, so below. As the Universe, so the Soul.
This is my soul’s work.
This Book of Shadows is my legacy; I can feel it all coming together, like a fire blazing in my core. My philosophy, my intuition, my beliefs, my passions, my talents, my truth: my magic.
My words. My insights. My emotions. My interpretations. My musings. Everything I’ve been taught to doubt: my magic.
This is it. Unapologetically and with a deep, calm knowing that this is how I feed my soul.
My whole life, I have yearned for spiritual connection. But, just like the majority of us, programming, trauma and, for a large part, dissociation had left me so ungrounded in that search for a spiritual path.
Now, I am here, humbly knowing my interconnection with the divine, and trusting my soul’s work as it deepens. That is magic.
My will sees to it that my soul has a playground of safety to explore, expand and play: and this is it.
I realise reading this back that I don’t directly answer the question (my dreamy Piscean nature forever showing her face) but it really sums up where this journey began for me.
The magic is the spiritual work.
My insight is spirit insight.
It’s not external. It never was.
My Next Chapter
The past couple of months have been delicious.
Every minute of spare time has been soaked in love, creativity, magical practice, studying and art. I’ve filled pages and pages in my Book of Shadows.
And after all the healing work I’ve done for myself mentally over the last 3 years, I’m finally able to integrate this philosophy. Maybe that’s the magic, too.
Using my will to alchemise the airy insights and deep emotions I’ve rejected my whole life into real-life, Earth-bound creative projects.
My first steps have been to revisit all of the scattered areas of esoteric, religious and spiritual philosophy I have visited over the years, and start pulling out what it all means to me.
I have pages and pages of symbolism and archetypal/energy research in my Book at the moment, and I also created a personal oracle deck to use alongside this.
Magic speaks to me the most through the planets, the chakras, and the elements. All of which I can’t wait to start musing about in this publication.
A lot of my magic and spell work is art and poetry based, so a place for some yummy morning pages or to piece my thoughts together a bit more on these subjects is going to be a beautiful addition to my practice.
I’ve been working with daily planetary and astrological energies, days of the week, lunar deities, the elements, and the chakras, as well as some wider mythologies and religious texts, and channeling that into a world of art and poetry.
And life has finally become beautiful.
If anyone wants to tag along on this journey. Please feel free to subscribe. I would love to connect with more people on their own magical path.

What is a book of shadows?

A Book of Shadows is a sort of personal, magical or spiritual journal, often used in Wiccan or other witchcraft practices to store spells, rituals, recipes and such.
For me, it’s like my spiritual and magical work have both come together as one now and my Book of Shadows is where I add key bits of my spiritual studies, write all my poetry (spells) and put art magick together (sigils and collages). It’s also where I keep all my astrology ritual things, too, for the Moon phases, planet symbology and such.
Hope this helps! 🫶
